Neglect

I’ve been neglecting those of you following my blog. My apologies.

The last two weeks I’ve started my MFA with the first class in creative non-fiction. Why I picked non-fiction for my first class in 35 years when I write fiction, is beyond me. It’s challenging. But not as challenging as my 18-y-o returning to school.

Last year he forfeited his high school diploma. After a year of trying to survive and get a job in one of the most economically challenging time in decades he has decided to return to school for his diploma. Mehlville School district has a wonderful on-line program and he is taking 8 courses, all on-line. I’ve been working with him and frankly, they are harder than my course, so far anyway.

It’s a uber time drain, but it very worth it. I listen to the lectures with him and try to help him form the answers to questions. He has some learning disabilities, so me sitting with him is not only helpful, but critical to his success. Maybe someday he will appreciate it.

Then he helps me with my work. He listens to my essays and make insightful comments and suggestions. He doesn’t see or care about the grammar and punctuation. All he cares about is the story and he is very good at finding holes in the plot.

So it’s all good. We’re helping each other, building our relationship and making memories. Bread Co is also making a fortune off us so we’re contributing to economic growth as well.

Thanks for following my rambles.

I’ll be posting Part 3 of Message In the Bottle later this week. I promise!
